Lao people have a taste of Chinese cooking

More than 50 participants gathered for a hands-on culinary journey at the inaugural Weekend Food Yaji Salon—Chinese Food Fair presented by the China Cultural Center in Laos in Vientiane on July 12.

The event sparked significant local interest, with all registrations filled within hours. Many residents expressed interest in future events after missing out.

In his welcome address, the center’s director, Luo Weijian, emphasized the cultural significance and philosophy behind the traditional Chinese dish of scrambled eggs with tomatoes. The red tomatoes symbolize a passion for life, while the golden eggs represent the joy of harvest. Together, they create a harmonious blend enjoyed across China.

This dish evokes a sense of home and is often one of the first recipes learned by children, passed down through generations in China, Luo said.

Yu Qiang, a senior Chinese chef, conducted a live demonstration for the participants gathering around the cooking bench.

He meticulously explained the entire process of preparing scrambled eggs with tomatoes, covering everything from selecting raw materials and cutting techniques to managing heat control. Within minutes, a vibrant and aromatic dish of scrambled eggs with tomatoes was ready, making a stunning debut.

Participants then had the opportunity to practice making the dish under Yu’s guidance, having a great time cooking and tasting their own uniquely flavored scrambled eggs with tomatoes.
