Anniversary commemoration for all compatriots united for nation

The 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War is something worth celebrating for the Chinese people. This was the consensus that emerged at a symposium in Beijing on Tuesday attended by hundreds of representatives, including those from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities.

As evident from the discussions at the symposium, this great victory inspires Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to work together to strive for the complete reunification of the country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

In the struggle against foreign aggression, Chinese compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and many others living overseas, demonstrated how they share a common destiny with the motherland.

For example, during the 50-year-long period when the Japanese occupied Taiwan, countless Taiwan compatriots fought heroic battles against the Japanese colonialists, resulting in the loss of over 650,000 lives.

After the outbreak of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, over 50,000 Taiwan compatriots, guided by the conviction that "to save Taiwan, we must first save the motherland", rushed to the Chinese mainland to join the war, demonstrating the integrity and dignity of being Chinese with their blood and lives.

Taiwan's return to the motherland after the war also underscores the historical and legal reality that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

It is good to see former Kuomintang chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu arrive in Beijing on Monday to participate in the commemorations. As she said, history cannot be forgotten, much less distorted, and commemorating this victory now is akin to paying a profound tribute to our ancestors.

However, the secessionist-minded Democratic Progressive Party authorities on the island have outrageously disregarded the significance of the victory and the commemorations. They have even tried to glorify Japan's colonial rule, and wantonly promoted "de-Sinicization" on the Chinese island.

Their actions betray their ancestors, insult the memory of the tremendous national sacrifices made by compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, are an affront to justice and the conscience of humanity, and evidence of their conspiracy to split the country.

No matter how difficult the conditions, no matter how brutal the war, no matter how great the sacrifices, the Chinese people never wavered in their resolve to defend their homeland and recover the Taiwan island.

Today, the Chinese nation is closer, more confident, and more capable than ever before to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the complete reunification of the island with its motherland.

This is also one of the reasons why China is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory against Japanese aggression.

The Chinese people were fighting for the very existence of the Chinese nation. Their strong resistance smashed Japanese militarists' dream of colonizing China and enslaving the Chinese people. And what Chinese people did during this war contributed tremendously to the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.

The military parade on Wednesday is intended to tell the world that China will never forget the martyrs who lost their lives in that war and will forever remember that part of history, and always contribute to maintaining world peace and promoting the role of the United Nations in upholding a just and equitable international order.

The Taiwan question arose because of national weakness and disorder, and it will be resolved through national rejuvenation.

With the united efforts of all Chinese people, the nation will accomplish national reunification and achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
