Nigeria launches massive vaccination campaign for children

Nigeria has launched one of the largest integrated vaccination campaigns in its history, aiming to protect around 106 million children against measles, rubella and poliomyelitis infections.

The nationwide drive combines multiple vaccines and essential child health services into a single coordinated effort, aiming to deliver comprehensive protection efficiently across the country.

Children aged 14 years and below will receive vaccines against measles and rubella, while those under five years will be immunized against polio. The first phase, launched on Monday, covers 20 high-risk northern states as well as Oyo state in the southwest. The second phase will begin in January, targeting the remaining southern states.

Gavi, a global health organization, is supporting the initiative with a $103 million investment. The organization is also working closely with the federal and state governments to strengthen systems, share expertise and ensure long-term sustainability.

The campaign builds on years of investment in Nigeria's health systems - including cold chain infrastructure, workforce capacity and digital tools - now being leveraged to deliver impact at scale.

It also incorporates the use of data and technology to inform decision-making, track progress and enhance public engagement.
