BEIJING - China's food and drug watchdog has investigated 11 bogus food products and warned consumers against buying them.

The 11 products, including a Hypoglycemic agent -- Tangshunin capsule -- manufactured by Zhejiang-based Fulaisen bio-engineering company, are found to contain chemical ingredients. They are also confirmed to be falsifying their purported health benefits, according to a statement from the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).

The SFDA urged local food and drug administrations to strengthen inspection over the food supplements market and severely punish the producers of the 11 fake varieties according to law.

Consumers can refer to www.sda.gov.cn, the SFDA's website, for licensing information of all food supplements, and report illegal or fake products to local authorities, said the statement.

In response to the recent media campaign on the safety hazards lurking in the food supplements market, SFDA spokeswoman Wang Lianglan said the SFDA will launch a campaign to overhaul and regulate food supplements on the shelves.

Wang said the SFDA pays close attention to the problems exposed by the media, and hopes to tackle the problem at its source, by going after the producers of these illegal products.

Wang thanked the media, including Xinhua News Agency, the People's Daily and the CCTV, for their investigative work in the food supplements market and for their support of the work of the SFDA.

The SFDA will tighten the approval system and raise the market standards for food supplements to ensure the legitimate rights and overall safety of consumers, said Wang.
