Asthma-hit singer stops Beijing gig

American jazz star Patti Austin cancelled a concert slated for Friday in Beijing after suffering a severe asthma attack in combination with a respiratory infection upon her arrival, said a statement on the singer's website. It is reported to be the first case of its kind in Austin's career. In 2008 she received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal album. The story is getting popular on Sina Weibo.

Lyu Dong, a former football player involved in a nationwide crackdown of soccer gambling, has opened a new company with friends after being released from prison. About 300 fans joined in to taste genetically-modified rice at Huazhong Agriculture University on Saturday.
