Nigerian banks must stop using attractive women to persuade customers to open accounts, Senate President David Mark was quoted as saying in Thursday's newspapers.
Mark said that despite a consolidation of the sector in 2005 that reduced the number of banks to 25 from 89 and was supposed to make them more efficient, many banks still used women to attract new business.
"Banks have made it a policy to employ beautiful ladies and give them targets to meet," Mark said during the inauguration of the new Senate committee on banking and insurance on Wednesday.
"This is unacceptable and must stop. You ordered the consolidation, so I think you must do something to stop it,” he said, addressing officials of the central bank.
"We thought that with the consolidation in the banking sector, the banks will have enough money and capacity to get customers. Why is it that all these girls are now moving around hustling?"
The consolidation, triggered by the central bank's decision to raise the minimum capital base for banks twelvefold, has been hailed by the Nigerian government as one of the major successes of economic reforms.
Banking stocks have boomed on the Lagos stock market since the consolidation, but analysts say many of the banks remain weak because they are reliant on deposits from government agencies and do little retail business.

馬克議長(zhǎng)說(shuō)，2005年，尼日利亞銀行業(yè)經(jīng)整合后，銀行數(shù)量從89家精減為25家，照說(shuō)銀行應(yīng)該能提高效率才對(duì)，但現(xiàn)在仍有不少銀行在利用美女來(lái)招攬生意。
上周三，馬克議長(zhǎng)在參議院的新銀行與保險(xiǎn)委員會(huì)成立儀式上說(shuō)：“銀行甚至制定了‘美女營(yíng)銷’策略，給這些女職員們定業(yè)績(jī)指標(biāo)。”
他對(duì)中央銀行的官員們說(shuō)：“必須禁止這種不正之風(fēng)。之前的整合是你們搞的，所以我認(rèn)為你們必須采取措施禁止這種不正之風(fēng)。”
“我們?cè)J(rèn)為，銀行經(jīng)整合后，會(huì)有充足的資金和能力來(lái)開(kāi)發(fā)客戶。為什么現(xiàn)在弄成了這些女孩在四處‘拉客’？”
此前，尼日利亞中央銀行為了將銀行的最低資本金提高12倍，對(duì)銀行業(yè)進(jìn)行了整合。這一舉措被尼日利亞政府認(rèn)為是經(jīng)濟(jì)改革的重大成功之一。
整合之后，拉哥斯股市上的銀行股票大漲。但分析人士稱，目前很多銀行股票仍然低迷，因?yàn)樗鼈冎饕揽空畽C(jī)構(gòu)的存款，自身很少開(kāi)展零售業(yè)務(wù)。
