“You're a stand-up guy, and that's great, but...”

Could you explain “stand-up-guy”?

My comments: A “stand-up guy” is someone you definitely want to have on your side. Whether he is an associate at work or a future husband, a stand-up guy is someone who is loyal, trustworthy, dependable and basically an all-around good person.

A stand-up guy is not to be confused with a “stand-up comedian”, an entertainer who performs jokes and funny dialogue while standing in front of an audience with a microphone.

According to the website phrases.org.uk, the phrase is American and was used as far back as 1935 in the newspaper “The Charleroi Mail” when someone was discussing New York Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert: "But he [Jacob Ruppert] seems to be a 'stand-up guy' and loyalty, with him, seems to be less a virtue than obsession."
