POWERCHINA-built substation handed over in Saudi Arabia

The transformer substation for the new Jazan 3,850 megawatt Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant in Saudi Arabia, was recently handed over to National Grid Saudi Arabia.

It marked the completion of the substation for the world's largest integrated cycle power plant project.

The transformer substation project was undertaken and completed by POWERCHINA Nuclear Engineering Company Limited and SEPCO Electric Power Construction Corporation, both subsidiaries of Beijing-based infrastructure construction group POWERCHINA.

The Jazan IGCC project will provide electricity for the Jazan Economic Area. Funded by Saudi Arabian oil giant Saudi Aramco, the substation connects Jazan Economic Area and National Grid Saudi Arabia.

It is the hub of the power grid in the region, covering the entire southeast of Saudi Arabia, connecting four surrounding substations and transmitting 2,400 MW of power.

The on-site design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the substation complied with the standards of Saudi power grid companies and the acceptance standards were extremely strict.

During the commissioning phase, in order to ensure the smooth progress of on-site tasks, the project team strengthened its technical support.

Some 19 engineers, 54 technicians in the project team and 12 staff members of National Grid Saudi Arabia participated in the commissioning.

The handover of the substation laid a solid foundation for the complete handover of the entire Jazan IGCC project project, which is also being built by POWERCHINA.

It demonstrated POWERCHINA's great performance capabilities and strengthened its profile in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia.
