POWERCHINA collects first revenue from CDM

Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Co in Laos received the first carbon emission reduction transaction payment on Nov 23. It is the first overseas project of POWERCHINA to obtain revenue from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

This was an important milestone for POWERCHINA and an essential step in establishing itself as a global brand.

Carrying out CDM work provides valuable experience for POWERCHINA's overseas projects and has demonstration significance for Chinese-funded enterprises in overseas clean energy development and greenhouse gas control.

CDM is an international compliance mechanism between developed and developing countries established in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. It promotes global sustainable development through a win-win mechanism design while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Project is the first hydropower project invested and developed by POWERCHINA in Laos. As a typical clean energy project, it started CDM registration in 2011.

Since the first unit was put into production in December 2012, the project company has adhered to advanced management concepts. It has firmly promoted project site safety and environmental protection management work, realizing the integration of economic and social benefits. At present, more than 3.3 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy has been provided to Laos.

The project has also actively promoted localized employment and further improved the living standards of local people.

Roads and bridges were built for the only village near the hydropower station, and developers provided regular physical examinations for the villagers and delivered school supplies for the children. More than 20 villagers are working at the power station.

In the future, Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Co will continue to do an excellent job in management and find new ways to increase revenue, reduce expenditures and improve quality and efficiency.
