I'm not sure about this. I think it mainly has to do with the fact that populations have increased. Take China for instance; there will be at least a hundred people lining up for every job. In that case parents really have to push their children to stand out. I was adopted and live with a Western family. My parents haven't pushed me but I manage to get decent grades. I can't help but wish they had really pressured me though. Decent grades will get you passes, but something greater would be more satisfactory.
