Academics is given a lot of emphasis in India. It is so competitive. The marks you obtain in your exams will determine your future professionally. I agree that some parents pressurize their kids too much. That is probably because they want their kids to be on a par with the others. If their kids do well they can boast about it to other parents. In many cases parents like to see their kids achieve what they didn't in their childhood. There are many avenues where a person can excel. For some, if their kids are not good academically, it is the end of the road. Kids should not be put under such pressure as I agree that some are emotionally upset and it does not improve the situation.
