Military drills should be welcomed as show of national solidarity

The open military drill also serves as public relations, celebration and education. Under Article 12 of the Garrisoning Law, the Hong Kong Garrison, together with the Hong Kong government, shall "jointly protect the military facilities and maintain the security of the military restricted zones". Without the permission of the commander of the Hong Kong Garrison, no person (other than those of the Hong Kong Garrison) may enter the military restricted zones. Thus, Hong Kong people rarely have the opportunity to witness the PLA's strength and spirit.

In an effort to break down the barriers between themselves and Hong Kong people, the Garrison organizes open days annually on May 1 (Labor Day), July 1 (HKSAR Establishment Day), August 1 (Army Day of the PLA) and October 1 (National Day). I have the experience of visiting the Hong Kong Garrison during its open days. Members of the Garrison are patriotic men and women of loyalty, discipline and determination. Their passionate demonstration of their arduous training and austere daily lives has a vigorous impact on visitors, especially children and youngsters.

As the Hong Kong Garrison organizes public events on celebratory public holidays, its activities are often welcomed by members of the community. A live military drill with real ammunition is no less thrilling and breathtaking than any military-themed movie - even those in 3D. Given the PLA's high standards and perfect performance, the shows never disappoint the audience. Such eye-opening military drills educate the public about actual military situations. Witnessing how our army fights against aggression and safeguards our security intensifies our sense of national identity and pride. Moreover, the open military drill further increases transparency and enhances the mutual understanding between the PLA and Hong Kong people.

People might even come to realize that if we had had such a military before, the city would not have been invaded by the Japanese forces during World War II. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory against Japan on September 3 this year, the PLA will launch a large-scale military drill. In remembering the humiliating three years and eight months of aggression suffered then, Hong Kong people can join hands with the unsung heroes of the PLA for their lifelong, selfless, noble pursuit of glory, justice and peace.
