During the seven-day National Day holiday, Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports welcomed a total of 1.8 million passengers, with a 9.2 percent year-on-year increase. The airports also witnessed an inbound and outbound peak with a total of 12,891 flights, an 8.9 percent rise compared with last year. There were a total of 8,113 inbound and outbound flights in Pudong Airport and 4,778 flights in Hongqiao Airport during the holiday.

The holiday passenger flow outbound peak appeared on Oct 1 with about 150,503 passengers departing from Pudong and Hongqiao airports. The inbound peak appeared on Oct 7, the last day of the holiday, with a total of 150,014 passengers arriving at Pudong and Hongqiao airports.

Concerning over-night parking, over 36,600 vehicles parked overnight at Pudong Airport during the holiday, a 40.72 percent year-on-year growth. The daily parking amount was much higher than the design capacity of 4,500 vehicles in Pudong’s two parking lots.

The airports also launched emergency measures, including issuing an early-warning notice, opening a temporary parking area, and providing shuttle buses between the temporary parking area and terminals. A total of 6,600 vehicles flocked into Pudong Airport on Oct 2. All passengers were encouraged to use public transportation, especially subways, to avoid delays caused by traffic jams.

Due to the return travel peak of tourists at night, Pudong and Hongqiao airports increased the frequency of night buses and added night bus stops to provide more convenient service for passengers arriving at Shanghai at night.
