Approved by the State Council, Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is a wholly state-owned company set up in September 2011 on the basis of 14 provincial/municipal/regional electric power survey and design, engineering and equipment manufacturing enterprises formerly affiliated to Sinohydro Group Ltd., HydroChina Corporation, State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid Company Limited.

POWERCHINA is an integrated construction group that provides investment and financing, planning design, engineering construction, equipment manufacturing and operation management for hydraulic and hydropower projects and infrastructure, and its principal businesses include energy and power and construction engineering (including survey, planning, design and project contracting),water ecological environmental governance and development and operation of other resources, real estate development and operation, and the manufacture and lease of related equipment. In addition, upon the authorization of relevant national ministries/commissions, POWERCHINA also undertakes functions such as national planning and review of hydropower, wind power, solar power and other clean energy and new energy sources. POWERCHINA ranks first in the global industry of electric power construction in terms of the planning, design and construction capability and performance.

Over the past years, POWERCHINA has made great contribution in the fields of water conservancy and hydropower design and construction, new energy development, thermal power grids, urban construction, transportation, infrastructure, and equipment manufacturing and leasing.

By the end of 2017, POWERCHINA had won 86 items of the Luban Prize for Construction Project, 44 National Quality Engineering Golden Award, 146 National Quality Engineering Award, 22 Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize, 25 China Quality Water Engineering Award, and 150 National Quality Engineering and Consulting Award.

POWERCHINA achieved the business revenue of 335 billion yuan ($52.3 billion) in 2017 with the profit of 13 billion yuan. By the end of 2017, the total assets had reached 709.8 billion yuan. It ranked 190th among Fortune Global 500 in the year of 2016, 42nd among Top 500 Enterprises of China; came fifth in the list of the world's 250 largest global contractors and placed second among top 150 engineering design companies worldwide according to ENR. For five consecutive years, it has been evaluated as a Grade A enterprise by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.

As of the end of 2017, POWERCHINA had six national-level R & D institutions, 76 provincial-level R & D institutions, six academicians' workstations and six postdoctoral workstations. Eighty of its member companies and subsidiaries were identified as provincial-level high-tech enterprises and four of them were identified as key high-tech enterprise of the Torch Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Meanwhile, POWERCHINA has won 106 national science and technology progress awards, 1,995 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards, and owns 9,493 patents (of which 1,470 were invention patents). The company has also participated in drafting and revising 514 items of the national and industrial standards.
