Could you explain “miss the boat”?

My comments: In the example above, the person in question needs to act fast or he will miss an important opportunity. It can also refer to being too late to get something you want: “We missed the boat on the sale of the Beijing Guo’an final match tickets.”

To “miss the boat” can also mean not understanding something, being ignorant, or just plain dumb: “He really missed the boat on that one.”
